Resilience First Aid seminar
9am, November 18
Green Room, Townson Oval, Merewether
Thomas Pulleine will present an insight into our latest course Resilience First Aid at a morning tea on November 18.
Thomas has a lived experience of mental health issues from his service in the Australian Army. He talks to work groups about the resilient mindset which helped him to recover from physical and mental injuries while serving as an infantry soldier and after leaving the ADF. As a civilian, Thomas has a successful career as a business owner and workplace trainer; applying the principles of Resilience First Aid.
He will talk about the current state of mental health issues that workplaces are facing and how using a proactive prevention, instead of reactively treating problems after they occur, can improve performance and reduce costs for Australian businesses.
Thomas will then provide an overview of Resilience First Aid and what the certification involves for workplaces including how to:
- train resilience champions & understand what protects mental health
- have proactive conversations that lift resilience
- learn how to spot risk and refer appropriately
- build own resilience and sustainability.
Why Resilience First Aid?
- Only 1 in 10 people have resilience that’s strong enough to protect against mental illness. This means 9 out of 10 of people can benefit from increasing resilience skills to boost protection against depression, anxiety, and other forms of mental ill-health.
- 50% of people will experience a period of mental illness in their life, but only two thirds will feel confident to talk about it with someone they trust.
- In Australia, the mental health crisis costs somewhere between $43 billion and $51 billion per year, while a further $130 billion is the cost of the loss in productivity due to the mental health issues.

Contextualised leadership training helps mine supervisors step up
We’ve started delivering a customised and contextualised pilot training program to give foundational leadership skills to supervisors at a Hunter Valley mine’s Coal Handling Preparation Plant .
The program is based on our popular Team Leader Supervisor Step-Up program. It focuses on six leadership competencies identified by the mine as business critical plus baseline skills in Microsoft Office and computing to address a gap in skills.
Experienced mine manager and trainer Jeff Hanlon is delivering the course. Jeff spent time interviewing mine management and reviewing policies and procedures to ensure the training is immediately relevant and engaging so participants can easily apply their learnings on the job.

TAE40116 Skill sets support Thiess’ workforce capability
It is great to have an ongoing working relationship with a leading national mining services provider that has a strong focus on workforce capability.
We’ve delivered several TAE40116 programs to Thiess. Its Training & Compliance Superintendent for NSW, WA and SA, Brendan Ward, says the training has been of great benefit in supporting the business’ continued growth.
“This training supports intakes of trainees and apprentices as well as the upskilling of our existing workforce,” Brendan says.
“The feedback on the training delivery – in terms of content and facilitation – was excellent. Our trainers and assessors have the “tools” to better equip and expand the workforce.”
