Our thanks go to the team at Whitehaven Coal (WHC) for hosting site visits for our Class of 2021 completing our new Cert IV in Surface Coal Mining (Open Cut Examiner) course.
The 18 aspiring open cut examiners are from a range of NSW coal mines.
- Whitehaven Coal (MCC, Tarrawonga, Werris Creek)
- BHP (Mount Arthur)
- Glencore (Ravensworth, Mangoola)
- Bloomfield Group (Rix Creek)
- Peabody Energy (Wilpinjong)
- Western Mining (Lithgow)
- Idemitsu Australia (Boggabri Coal).
Flooding issues meant improvising some plant visits but the class had a productive two days. They visited WHC operational sites and heard from course Trainer and Assessor, Jeff Hanlon, and WHC guest speakers. The speakers included Gunnedah CHPP Supervisor, Craig Ellis, MEM Maules Creek Open Cut Operations, Blair Myers, and General Manager Gunnedah Open Cut Operations, Dean Scott.
Whitehaven’s Group Training Specialist Damien Roman said the visit showcased its business to a large group of mine workers.
About the course
The course is mandatory for people who don’t have a Bachelor of Mining Engineering through an Australian university but want to perform the role of Open Cut Examiner (OCE) at a surface coal mine or open cut coal mine site.
This qualification gives people skills to manage a broad range of, day-to-day, operational mining activities as well as handle in-depth issues and problems.
An OCE is responsible for ensuring a safe work environment. They apply the safety and health management system in and around work areas of surface excavation. This includes monitoring the quantity and quality of output, supervising others, and applying solutions to non-routine problems.
The process to becoming an OCE varies between Australian states and territories. In NSW, you need to complete this course (or a Bachelor of Mining Engineering), have minimum industry experience, and pass an additional written and oral examination.
