Case study: Skillset program helps Mullane tackle skills shortages

A customised training program developed and delivered by Forsythes Training has helped Hunter and Central Coast plumbing, drainage, gas, roofing and electrical services company Mullane to effectively skill up its existing team.

Over five months in 2023,  38staff undertook skill sets in leadership and management, project management and staff development and mentoring

Leadership and Management Skills training

The leadership and management training package gave 10 department managers and a director skills and competencies in:

  • developing and using emotional intelligence
  • leading teams effectively
  • effective workplace relationships
  • facilitating teams.

Mullane wanted participants to get an understanding of self-awareness and how they communicate with their team. The managers learned new techniques for working with their teams and the difference between coaching and mentoring.

Communication was another important unit. The training gave managers practical techniques to implement in performance reviews and to identify up and coming stars within their teams.

Project Management Skills Training

The project management training package gave 13 of Mullane’s project and program managers skills and competencies in:

  • developing and using emotional intelligence
  • applying project lifecycle management processes
  • applying project scope management techniques
  • applying project time management techniques
  • applying project cost management techniques.

Mullane wanted to upskill existing employees on project lifecycle management as well as how to pass on knowledge to up-and-coming tradesmen looking for career advancement.

Developing and mentoring others skills training

This training package gave a group of 14, including a site foreman and fourth year apprentices skills and competencies for:

  • developing and using emotional intelligence
  • providing work skill instruction
  • mentoring in the workplace.

It will help with onboarding new apprentices into their departments. A second round of this training is set for later in 2023.

The benefits of customised training to Mullane and its people

Mullane’s People and Training Manager Leigh Killian said the training has given Mullane team members new skills to create a learning and development culture to grow emerging leaders through training, upskilling and mentorship.

Leigh said many of the participants had not received formal training in a very long time. They were able to learn new skills and gain a better understanding of clear communication and how to connect with their teams.

She said there were many direct and indirect benefits from the training program including:

  • upskilling existing workers
  • staff engagement and retention
  • succession planning and identifying and preparing future leaders
  • providing a quality environment for new apprentices and new employees
  • creating a positive work culture towards training and its benefits.

“Mullane has put some of the learning techniques into our performance review system. Our 1:1 monthly performance management review catch-ups include the new learnings.”

“The response of our team about the training around developing and mentoring others was exciting. At Mullane we value this skill and our team members were wanting to learn more. During class, our team talked about putting the techniques practiced and assessed into daily responsibilities within the workplace.”

“Having different foremen from different departments together in one room was a successful approach that we will repeat. Everyone enjoyed sharing their experiences. It was wonderful to see the collaboration across multiple departments.”

Forsythes Training’s Successful Training Approach

Leigh said prior to commencing training, Forsythes Training took the time to understand Mullane’s needs and wants from the training. He said Mullane has a program to create process and foundations for a continuous improvement model to support and educate future leaders.

“We needed to train and support those who were currently managing our people,” Leigh said.

“Forsythes Training was able to customise components of the training to embed our processes and documents into the learnings to make it relevant to what staff are currently doing in the workplace,” she said.

“This practical approach to training really allowed our team members the opportunity to put formalised training and practical experience together, complimenting each other.”
