The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has extended its partnership with Forsythes Training so more of its volunteers can boost their skills and capability in training and assessment.
Forsythes Training helped the RFS to develop its Boost program. Since June 2021 trainers have been delivering a customised range of training workshops using a variety of delivery methods at different times to meet the needs of the RFS.
The six-month contract extension to December 2024 will allow the RFS achieve its target of 1,000 volunteer members qualified to support the internal training effort.
TAE Training need
RFS needs some of its staff and volunteers to have the required skills and competencies to train and assess others. Firefighting is a dangerous business and with a range of other operational capabilities to deliver, it is vital volunteers receive effective training and an accurate assessment of their competency in performing key tasks.
TAE training solution
The NSW RFS Boost program has offered several training options including:
- customised RFS TAE skillset
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment Education TAE40116
- upgrade from TAE40110 to TAE40116.
The skillset focusses on the fundamental areas of:
- preparing & delivering components of NSW RFS training content
- practicing their presentation and training skills with their NSW RFS peers
- theory of workplace coaching
- theory of workplace assessment & gathering evidence using NSW RFS assessment tools.
Flexible delivery of TAE training
Understanding that the training participants are largely volunteers, Forysthes Training offers training on two weekday evenings and on weekends.
The training has largely been delivered live by virtual classroom, initially because of COVID 19 restrictions. This has been an effective training delivery method because participants are from across NSW.
With COVID concerns easing, face to face training is available in locations across NSW for those who prefer that training environment.
Successful outcomes
Feedback from training participants and RFS management has been very positive.
Sharon Nacey Administration Coordinator, Strategic Programs was at a recent face to face workshop with trainer Dawn Hogan.
Sharon was particularly impressed with Dawn’s ability to motivate and engage the participants. She said it was great to see everyone sharing different stories to help, encourage and learn off each other.
“More importantly, every member wanted to make a difference, progress, discuss solutions and complete their tasks,” Sharon said.
When seeking the contract extension, RFS Manager Strategic Programs, Michael Taylor thanked the Forsythes Training team for the high standard of care and quality extended to RFS members on a daily basis.
“It is a pleasure for our team to partner with yours to deliver this program and achieve such great outcomes for our members, Areas and Districts,” Michael said.
