Leading Newcastle-based Registered Training Organisation, Forsythes Training, and Singleton-based company, Core Mine, are partnering to better support people who want to be open cut examiners (OCE) in open cut coal mines.
Our new Trainer and Assessor Greg McCormack will deliver the nationally recognised qualification RII40220 Certificate IV in Surface Coal Mining (Open Cut Examiner) qualification. This is the prerequisite course for those wanting to be an OCE who have not done a Bachelor of Mining Engineering through an Australian university.
Core Mine will provide the CoreOCE mentoring sessions to help people pass the challenging OCE examinations. The next written exam in NSW is May 15. Oral examinations are on either August 15 or next year on February 12. Over the past few years Forsythes Training has delivered both the qualification and the exam mentoring services.
Forsythes Training focuses on the qualification
Forsythes Training CEO, Chad White, said the 14 week qualification gives people skills to manage a broad range of, day-to-day, operational mining activities as well as handle in-depth issues and problems.
Chad said the qualification further extends Forsythes Training’s comprehensive service offering to the mining sector to ensure they have the skills to operate productively and safely, now and in the future.
“Quality training helps the mining sector to adapt to changing business environments, remain sustainable and meet regulatory requirements,” Chad said.
NSW mines must comply with the Maintenance of Competence Scheme developed by the NSW Resources Regulator, in consultation with the Mining and Petroleum Competence Board.
“With many skills and competencies linked to regulated statutory functions, the resources sector invests significant time and resources to ensure its people’s knowledge and skills are always up-to-date.”
“At Forsythes Training we have almost every aspect of the mining sector’s training and organisational development needs covered. There are leadership and management, project management, WHS, and Training and Assessment Education (TAE) qualifications, skill sets and short courses. Workshops and short courses in computing skills, business skills, and mental health and resilience skills prove popular. Then there is more specific sector training such as Maintenance of Competence, Associated Non-Technical Skills (ANTS) and risk management systems including ICAM Lead Investigations.”
Core Mine continues mentoring for written and oral OCE examinations
Core Mine founder and director, Kim Nguyen, has 25 years’ experience in the mining sector. Kim had varied operational roles across NSW mines and mining companies before moving management roles. He spent nine years in the Coal Competence Unit, writing and marking exams, as well as assessing candidates in their oral exams.
“We unpack the key details of open cut operations to prepare mentees for their role as well as their exam.” Kim said.
“Instead of going through year after year of previous exams, we cover the theory behind each topic. Then, we create real-world scenarios for you to apply the newly learned skills.”
The CreOCE examinations mentoring program includes:
- eight weeks of face to face delivery
- a study pack
- 24/7 access to online resources that help stimulate effective study
- quizzes and prompts to further understand key topics
- direct access to qualified trainers.
An OCE is responsible for ensuring a safe work environment by applying the safety and health management system in and around work areas of surface excavation, including monitoring the quantity and quality of output, supervising others, and applying solutions to non-routine problems.
