Registered Training Organisation FAQ's

What is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)?

Registered training organisations is a training provider registered by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

Registration requires the provider meet rigorous government set quality standards and enables that provider to issue nationally recognised qualifications to course participants.

What Qualifications can RTO's offer?

Registered training providers can offer certain qualifications (depending on their registration and capabilities) at the following levels:

  • Certificates I, II, III and IV
  • Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma
  • Graduate Certificate
  • Graduate Diploma

Un-registered training organisations are not eligible to offer qualifications and ASQA enforces this heavily.

What is an RTO number?

An RTO’s number is it’s unique identifier that enables potential students to review that providers registration status and confirm they a registered training organisation.

Forsythes Training for example is eligible to provide JobTrainer and subsidised training to eligible individuals in select states.

Do you need to be an RTO to deliver training?

You do not need to be a registered training organisation to deliver training however you do need to be an RTO to deliver nationally recognised training in the form of recognised qualifications such as:

  • Certificates I, II, III and IV
  • Diplomas
  • Advanced Diplomas
  • Graduate Certificates
  • Graduate Diplomas

What are the standards required for registered training organisations?

ASQA has strict standards that must be met to be eligible for RTO status including:

  • Quality training & assessment practices and strategies
  • Qualified trainers and assessors capable of delivering the training
  • Industry relevant practices informed by industry engagement
  • Learner support and services
  • Systematic validation of assessment practices
  • Current AQF qualifications and processes in place for transition as old material is superseded
  • Operations are quality assured, which includes monitoring and evaluating training and assessment strategies and practices and ensuring they meet training package and VET accredited course requirements
  • Accurate and accessible information about an RTO, it’s services and performance
  • Ensuring learners are properly informed and protected
  • Ensuring complaints and appeals are recorded, acknowledged and dealt with fairly, efficiently and effectively
  • Effective governance and administration
  • Ongoing cooperation with the VET regulator and legal compliance
