Course Overview
TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is a nationally recognised qualification that is designed to prepare individuals for the role of vocational education and training (VET) teachers, trainers, and assessors. The qualification is suitable for those who are seeking to enter the VET sector or for those who are already working in the sector and wish to design, deliver and assess competency based training.
Forsythes Training offer our students the option to complete some or all of their units in TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment via Recognition of Prior Learning.
What is RPL?
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is a process that assesses your competency—acquired through formal and informal learning—to determine if you meet the requirements for a unit of study.
- formal learning refers to learning that takes place through a structured program of instruction and is linked to the attainment of an AQF qualification or statement of attainment (for example, a certificate or diploma; and
- non-formal learning refers to learning that takes place through a structured program of instruction, but does not lead to the attainment of an AQF qualification or statement of attainment (for example, in-house professional development programs conducted by a business); and
- informal learning refers to learning that results through experience of work-related, volunteer, social, family, hobby or leisure activities (for example the acquisition of interpersonal skills developed through several years as a sales representative), paid or unpaid.
You can use a variety of documentation to apply for RPL. This includes, but is not limited to:
- records of completed training
- assessment items
- assessment records
- declarations from your employer, and/or
- a copy of your student records provided by ASQA.
Each provider has its own RPL process, so don’t hesitate to contact Forsythes Training for assistance with applying for RPL. (Source: What is RPL? | Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA))
Assessment involves judgement – RPL is simply an alternate method of assessment
This tool involves the use of a “competency conversation” in addition to a portfolio of evidence to maximise the candidate’s opportunities to demonstrate competence. This is NOT an oral exam. It is about using holistic questions provided to start a conversation with the candidate which draws out their actual individual experiences and relevant skills. In other words, it is about the assessor probing the candidate through a conversation to draw out further information on the candidate’s relevant experience in the unit they are seeking RPL for.
