Course Overview

TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment reflects the roles of individuals delivering training and assessment services in the vocational education and training (VET) sector.

This qualification (or the skill sets derived from units of competency within it) is also suitable preparation for those engaged in the delivery of training and assessment of competence in a workplace context, as a component of a structured VET program.

This qualification is the national minimum standard formally required by professionals involved in training and assessment. This course provides all the skills necessary to conduct training and assessment in a professional manner.

Course Structure

This course is organised into ten (10) units of competency, made up of nine (9) core units plus one (1) elective unit.

The program is comprised of:

  • Twelve (12) online virtual meeting sessions
  • 88 hours of live webinars
  • 24/7 access to online course content and E-learning

Online Delivery

ZOOM virtual classroom includes the following:

  • 12 Face to face live webinars in virtual classroom environment – these sessions are recorded and distributed via Dropbox to all attendees for future reference

  • Whiteboard activities
  • Break out rooms for group activities or one on one feedback
  • 5 live scheduled webinars for assessment activities that involve trainer observations

Who should attend?

This course is ideal for those who require a more flexible mode of content delivery. This course is a qualification for enterprise and RTO trainers and assessors wishing to obtain the training and assessment competencies to assess according to industry requirements.

These individuals would require the skills to plan, prepare, deliver, assess and improve vocational training. Individuals should be engaged in a training and education environment or have vocational skills at a level that supports training and education in the subject area in which they intend to teach.

The technical expertise achieved in this qualification may be utilised in, and is not limited to, the following job roles:

  • Enterprise trainer
  • Enterprise assessor
  • RTO trainer
  • RTO assessor

  • Training adviser or training needs analyst
  • Vocational education teacher
  • Employees who need to achieve this level in the workplace. These people may have experience but lack formal qualifications.

Entry Requirement

Those entering this program must be able to demonstrate vocational competency in their proposed teaching and assessing area.

Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, and may include, but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification.

You will be asked to complete a series of questions relating to your previous employment and training history. You will be required to agree to and provide written permission for Forsythes Training to contact your employer.


After achieving TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, participants may undertake TAE50116 Diploma in Vocational Education and Training or TAE50216 Diploma in Training Design and Development.

The qualification also provides an opportunity for existing workers to obtain formal qualifications for the skills already acquired with experience.

Recognition of Prior Learning

For participants not wishing to attend classroom workshops, skills recognition through an assessment only pathway is available through a formal RPL application process where previous industry experience applies. A Recognition kit will need to be completed.

AQF Qualifications and Statements of Attainment are recognised at enrolment or during the course through the Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer process, provided qualifications are relevant to the course undertaken are current.

Participants are provided with a full set of participant guides and assessment booklets for use throughout the program with clear instructions on the assessments required.

  • In class assessments, role plays and question and answer activities
  • Work based assessment and self-paced assessment activities

Student Support days

Part of the program contains sections of self-paced learning where participants are required to complete some assessments within their workplace/outside of classroom workshops.

This includes on-the-job learning, research and additional reading.

Forsythes Training has grouped the units of competency into four (4) clusters (listed below) which provides more opportunity for flexible delivery and assessment.

Participants are provided a full brief on the outcomes of the training and assessment and are provided an overview at the commencement of the program.

This is discussed in detail with participants and are advised in induction to seek support from the trainer/assessor should the need arise throughout the program.
