The Resources and Infrastructure Training Package RII09 has been developed as a result of extensive industry consultation and validation. This Training Package has been revised to address the needs of all aspects of the brown and black coal industry, including:

  • Underground Coal Mining
  • Open Cut/Surface Coal Mining
  • Coal Preparation and Treatment
Units of Competency

  • RIIRIS301B: Apply Risk Management Processes (Previously called S1)
    This unit covers the application of the processes and tasks to conduct inspections and to identify, analyse, assess risks, recommend treatment, contribute to implementation of treatments and to monitor risks. It also covers participation in the preparation, testing and documentation of site working instructions or equivalent.
  • RIICOM301B: Communicate Information (Previously called S3)
    This unit covers the function required to effectively communicate information with other persons in the mining industry. This includes communicating verbally, communicating in written and report form, participating in meetings, making presentations, and participating in operational level negotiations.
  • RIIOHS301A: Conduct Health & Safety Investigations (Previously called S2)
    This unit covers the application of safety and health investigative processes at the operational level, including the identification and collection of evidence, the analysis of evidence to identify the reasons for and results of the occurrence or situations, and the identification and documentation of courses of action to resolve and/or prevent re-occurrence of the issues or problems.
  • RIIRIS402A: Carry out the risk management processes (Previously called G2)
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to implement and apply risk management processes within an established system for a mine site/area, including the application of local hazard identification, formal risk assessment and implementation of risk controls. It includes the monitoring of the system, reporting on implementation issues, communication of processes and systems, and the review and auditing of the risk management processes and systems.

Assessment Methodology

Assessments can occur on the job, off the job or in a combination of both these methods.
Assessments may utilise the following methods:
  • Include assignment and/or demonstration through questioning either verbal or written, understanding of the underpinning knowledge of the competencies
  • Demonstration of practical skill in a workplace or simulated environment
  • Recognition of prior learning and current competency
  • Third party documentation, interview processes and employer support documentation
Statement of Attainment Issued
On successful completion of required assessments, participants will receive a statement of attainment listing the following units of competency:

For the RIIRIS301B, RIIOHS301A, RIICOM301B units of competency (previously known as S1, S2, S3):
  • RIIRIS301B: Apply Risk Management Processes
  • RIIOHS301A: Conduct Health & Safety Investigations
  • RIICOM301B: Communicate Information
For the RIIRIS402A unit of competency (previously known as G2):
  • RIIRIS402A: Carry out the risk management processes
